Become yourself, now

So apparently there's this technique of reinventing yourself via a second self. I heard this from Academy of Ideas. Who had read about it somewhere. (I'm not in the mood to track the origins right now. Send me an email and demand it if you want.)

If you're not happy with the way you are right now, you can probably draw a mental picture of such a self that you would be happy with the way it is. This is the second self. Write down all the characteristics that this better, second self has. Most likely that version of you differs massively from your current self in at least one definite way.

Then do a ritual, and become that better, second self.

Oh, how easy it sounds like when I say it like that. And naturally it's far from it. But there are three things that help make this work effectively, and perhaps they hold the key to the smooth and relatively easy success of this technique.

  1. You have to be very specific in the way you describe your second self. As in, you need to know how he behaves and dresses and thinks and speaks etc before you can even think about becoming him.
  2. The routine. Comb you hair a specific way, chew gum, say certain words - anything that feels powerful to you. Do the routine and become the second self. The routine is a cue, and it tells your brain you're no longer that old self. Do not leave this out!
  3. Do not tell anyone that you're doing this experiment. That would both make them think you're just acting AND suggest to your brain that the change is temporary. You don't want it to be temporary. You want people to really believe this is you, and the longer you are and the more often you become your second self, the harder it is for you to return to that old self you want to get rid of.

So, basically, in essence, this is fake it til you make it, between the lines.

I don't know if this works. And I don't know how long it would take to succeed in fully becoming the new self. But darn, it sounds like something to give a shot.
