If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him

A quote by Voltaire, which I just read in Karamazov.

Enough said? I mean, whoever has the strength to bear the weight of existence alone?

And what anarchy would humanity descend into without divine rules?

Is God the difference between civilization and animals?

Is God a necessary weapon against nihilism? What would Nietzsche think?

And if God did not exist, could people believe in something they know they invented themselves? Is the human invention of God the best kept secret in history? Is this information the thing that the Freemasons are trying to protect?

But how could they ever have such definite proof of the non-existence of God?

***

...and other irrelevant speculations, since it matters not if God was real or man-made, because the effect is the same.
