Need for Speed (2014): an underrated movie gem

I'm not a big fan of the Fast and Furious franchise. The first one is good. Then it slowly and steadily becomes more and more ridiculous with irrational physics and people dying and coming back to life. It has a good value base - "family" - but everything else that happens is pretty nonsensical. (I've only seen a couple of them, though, so I definitely shouldn't be giving my two cents like this.)

Before you jump to conclusions and assume I dislike FF because I dislike all racing movies, let me assure you that I don't. I love a good racing movie. I really enjoyed Rush (2013) and Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) and even Death Race (2008). Ford v Ferrari (2019) was a tad long but otherwise all right.

But my absolute favorite is Scott Waugh's Need for Speed from 2014. Movies based on games usually lack a good script, but this one nails it. Each scene moves the story forward in the direction that inevitably leads to the end result. I love it when that happens. No unnecessary scenes. Even subplots feed to the main story line.

Not to mention the score. The score is awesome.

And the scene where Rami Malek's character quits his job. (The reason he gives for the way he does it is one giant metaphor for life.)

On the other hand, one thing that doesn't contribute to the movie's greatness at all is that it features not one, but three Koenigsegg Ageras - my dream car.

Anyway.

Good movies are good. That's all I'm going to say.

P.S. I can't wait for them to make a movie about the Verstappen - Hamilton rivalry of 2021.
