Christopher Nolan movie tier list

. 1 min read

Just like basically everyone else on Earth, I like Christoper Nolan's movies. He's an incredibly talented director and I'm a big fan of his work. Therefore it's only logical that I share my C. Nolan movie tier list that excludes the movies I haven't yet seen (which is Quay and everything before the year 2000). Note that the list is, despite the intangible quality of the tier names, in descending order.

Sublime: Memento, Tenet.

Perfect masterpiece: The Prestige, Interstellar.

Absolutely brilliant: The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception.

Excellent: Insomnia, Batman Begins, Dunkirk, Oppenheimer.

Now, a few observations:

  1. One might notice that I placed the Nolan movie that everyone hates in the highest tier: Tenet. I utterly and absolutely LOVE Tenet. It's perfect. It's flawless. It's one of my all time favorite movies. And until a few weeks ago, even after seeing it several times, I didn't know why. (Now I know; more about that later.)
  2. The Prestige is not in the highest tier, even though I love it perhaps more than Memento.
  3. I've loved Memento since I was very young, and that sense of nostalgia might be the reason it's still in the highest tier. I haven't seen the film in at least ten years. Rationally, I should rate it lower than The Prestige. But you know, nostalgia.
  4. I seem to prefer time warping and psychological movies over historical movies.
  5. I'm doing the "analyzing my own opinions as an outside observer" again.
