As mentioned in today's podcast episode, I went to the opera for the first time in my life, to see the most famous one of them all: The Phantom of the Opera. Based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, it's a legendary piece of culture. Here are some factoids about the whole incident, for my own future reference:
- Some friends of mine who go to the opera quite regularly informed me that The Phantom isn't a real opera - that it's more of a musical.
- I went with my sister, who is the best company for events like these, and not only because she always goes along with my crazy accessory ideas (we both had stick-held half-face phantom masks) and takes the dressing up as seriously as I do (her natural beauty combined with her gown and makeup, she was the most stunning woman in the audience!).
- I adored the music and the set design.
- The plot of the opera was inferior to that of the novel, but it didn't bother me much (the set design and the music were too overpowering to notice anything else).
- They actually had a chandelier that crashed down from the ceiling! It was glorious!
Needless to say, I had a lot of fun and enjoyed the show enormously.
