I've noticed some stuff lately. I'm sure you also sometimes notice things. Noticing interesting or thought provoking events and ideas are most of the time, if not every time, fun to analyze. Here are three carefully selected observations I've come across this week.
- How I eat affects everything.
I spent another small one night staycation in a nearby city last Monday and let my new carnivore diet slip a bit. I ate candy sweetened with stevia, some vegetables, and scrambled eggs that probably had dairy in it. When I returned home, I somehow didn't get back to the strict carnivore way, but had a little popcorn here and a little keto brownie there. I even made a keto version of a green cake (a traditional Swedish delight and my absolute downfall) that had a lot of erythritol and whipped cream in it. And I think because of this dirty eating, I've been a little blue all week. Not much, but just enough for others to notice it. Not to mention what the cake did to my face - zits like I was in my teens again. So to get myself back on track, I've only eaten chicken in different forms today. I actually have a partridge roasting in the oven as we speak.
- The news or current event media broadcasts I subject myself to affect my mood.
We have an election coming up where I live. I haven't voted in years - the reason is a good topic for an article of its own, so I won't get into it - but earlier this week, I happened to be present when my partner was watching a debate on TV. And to my disgust, I noticed I disagreed with every single one of the candidates in that debate. This reminded me, in a wonderfully bittersweet manner, why I don't follow the news or keep myself up to date with politics: people argue which way they should make the world a worse place.
- I'm capable of stuff I didn't know I was capable of.
Remember the green cake mentioned above? Well, it's not that easy to make. Since I wanted to make it keto, sugar free and gluten free, I had to do every single part of the cake from scratch myself: the sponge cake layers, the raspberry jam, the vanilla custard, the whipped cream, and the green marzipan. The sponge cake was ok - I used almond flour and erythritol. The jam was fine. The custard I managed to get scrambled, but it tasted right nonetheless. Whipping the cream was as easy as ever. But the marzipan? I failed to finely powder the erythritol, so it became a little grainy, and wrapping the cake in it was a nightmare. But I managed. It wasn't pretty, and it didn't taste quite right, but it looked somewhat like green cake and the whipped cream was nice. (Encouraged by this almost-success, I decided to try cooking said partridge for the first time ever, and it's going to hell.)
