Here's the thing -
I'm such a typical woman. At least in the sense that I like making my spaces look and feel good. I don't think I'd make a good interior designer - I'm more talented at fixing houses at structural and layout related levels - but when it comes to decorating my own home and my own office, I think I have at least a slight grasp of what I'm doing. Here's my usual MO:
- If I have a strong vision in my head, I just follow that.
- If I have just a vibe in mind, I find pictures online that go with the vibe, and create a collage of them to see how all the elements work together. (This is how I found out that light wood nightstands are definitely the wrong choice for the Penthouse.)
- I start procuring the elements in the collage and update the collage with new ideas as I go.
- When obstacles present themselves (as they always, without failure, do), I overcome them.
Here's an example of the last one: my partner and I want a TV in the bedroom. However, generally, I have a rule against TV's in the bedroom. But the TV wouldn't be for mindless channel surfing just before bed; it would be for romantic movie nights, sitting in bed, watching good cinema with appropriate beverages.
But, as said, I have a rule against TV's in the bedroom - not just to avoid mindless channel surfing just before bed, but because big black shiny boxes are ugly, and they definitely do not enhance the serenity that a bedroom should have.
So, referring to step 4 of the MO above, I overcome the obstacle by hiding the big black shiny box that is ugly. My ingenious engineering brain decided to hide the box inside another box - a bookcase with doors.
However, there are NO bookcases big enough for the TV we have.
So, my ingenious engineering brain decided that I would build a custom one.
Which would be great, were it not for another obstacle, this time a mental one: after one unsuccessful case of trying to use a reciprocating saw, I now have a huge aversion to use said saw.
And since I'm a woman with virtually no muscle power, using a hand saw is out of the question.
In fact, making all of the needed furniture to custom measurements would be the ideal solution to any space. It would literally solve all my problems.
I just need to overcome my fear of using the freaking saw.
