A strange phenomenon has taken residence in my everyday life. In fact, it's been there for a while already. But for whatever reason, I've just lived with it, with no real consciousness or desire to do anything about it.
I open my computer, check my emails, and go to YouTube, only to scroll down to the very end of the front page without finding anything interesting.
I used to find videos on YouTube entertaining, sometimes even informative. But that has changed. Nowadays there's nothing good there, and the reason is probably one of the following:
- Since I don't subscribe to any channel, the algorithm has a hard time recommending videos that would truly catch my interest.
- The quality of videos there has decreased to the point that they appeal less and less to everyone, not just me.
- I just don't like watching videos anymore.
The first is not likely to be the reason, because even though I don't subscribe to channels, I do watch videos on the same laptop and with the same IP address, which gives the algorithm just as much information as subscribing (I think).
The second is probably true - that producers have gotten lazy and don't make as good videos anymore. But they also make shorter videos nowadays, and I prefer long form content. (In fact, short videos make me feel icky.)
The third could also be the case. I mean, even though the best length for a video is a full blown movie, even those I watch less and less these days.
Maybe I'm going through a book phase.
(Phase, haha.)
P.S. I do still watch movies, it's just less than before. I saw The Menu on Saturday. And The Time Traveler's Wife last week. And I'm really looking forward to the new Naked Gun.
But I admit that something feels different.
