There's something about European wheat: Frankfurt foodie adventures of 2023

. 1 min read

So anyhow - I woke up home the other day and went out to get a cup of coffee and

lo and behold, I found myself in Frankfurt,

with the skyscrapers and the Main river and everyone speaking German, including the waiter in the restaurant to whom I said "Danke" and he immediately started speaking German to me so quickly that I couldn't make out a word and I had to stutter through my awkward laugh that I only speak a little German.

The lamb steak I ordered took a while to prepare so I filled my stomach with this incredible white bread they brought us to start with. After lunch, I got a debilitating stomachache.

At dinner, I ordered a steak tartar and refrained from eating the bread, which resulted in a pleasant evening without a stomachache.

The next morning at breakfast, I had eggs and bratwurst and a few of what looked like beef patties. There wasn't an ingredients list but I decided to risk it. The taste indicated that there were onions and some sort of flour in the patty.

Right after breakfast, I got a stomachache.

So what gives? The same thing happened with the Swedish meatballs. There's something up with the wheat, I'm telling you.

Or my gut.

But let's not blame the gut.

(Maybe I'll refrain from everything but fresh cuts of meat from now on.)

(I'm already scared of how my gut will handle the Caribbean food.)
