Welcome back to RK's holiday special series, Best Christmas of All Time! Yesterday, I listed the movies I plan on watching in December. Today, we'll talk about food and what kinds of things you could add to your Christmas menu to make this Christmas the Best Christmas of All Time.
- My absolute favorite Christmas food is this weird thing called rutabaga casserole. It's a casserole made of mushed rutabaga (a root vegetable also known as a swede, but calling the dish swede casserole sounds a little suspicious), eggs, cream, ginger, and nutmeg. It's delicious, and I'm proud to declare that having perfected the recipe for years, I now make the best rutabaga casserole in the world, and I refuse to eat any store-bought version.
- Since this is the Best Christmas of All Time, I also refuse to comromise on the drinks and will have mulled wine to my heart's desire. I stumbled upon a sparkling version last week, and while that sounds a little weird, I'm willing to try it. I also plan on making a batch of the traditional one myself.
- Speaking of drinks... eggnog. It's been too long since I last had it. It's about time I made some.
- Another dish I have a knack for making is ice cream, and I plan on trying some new, Christmassy flavors! I'll give at least gingerbread and cinnamon bun a go, but who knows - maybe that homemade batch of mulled wine will find itself in this chilled, creamy, and delicious form as well.
- When it comes to Christmas menus, chocolates can never be ignored. I'm especially looking forward to the Lindt Lindor Marc de Champagne truffles. Overall, I'm prioritizing high quality chocolate this year.
- Let's not forget protein! Beef stew, roast beef, brisket... any beef would do. I'm also going to roast a whole chicken. (I don't think a turkey would fit in my oven.) No need for egg dishes; there are plenty of yolks in the ice creams and eggnog.
- Sandwiches. My monster sandwiches are a good start, but I'm also looking forward to toast skagen (a Swedish shrimp and mayo sandwich).
- Rice pudding with cinnamon and butter and perhaps a little raspberry jam. Enough said.
- And finally... Swedish green cake. I couldn't not mention this as it's the best cake in existence. Raspberry jam, vanilla custard, whipped cream, and marzipan layered on a thin sponge cake... The flavors are in perfect balance and it's never too dry.
All I can say is that I will gain so much weight next month.
